Abstract

English abstract What Goes Around, Comes Around: On Diversity Perspectives in the Final Examination in Teacher Education In spite of targets for inclusion and equality in the Norwegian education system, research shows that it still perpetuates inequality. The intention is apparent in strategic documents for teacher training that in their future profession as teachers, students must prepare to plan inclusive, fair and suitable education, and lifelong learning for all pupils. This article is based on a study designed to clarify how the perspective on diversity is expressed in the reflective notes which constitute the final written examinations at Norwegian teacher training colleges. We have based our analysis on a critical thematic analysis in two phases and norm-critical perspectives. We analysed a total of 104 reflective notes, and also syllabuses and guidelines for examinations. Our main findings were that the reflective notes were predominantly characterised by individual perspectives on pupil diversity, and an absence of discussion of how structural factors may hinder inclusion and equality. Our analyses of syllabuses and guidelines indicate that the priority given to performative aspects of teaching appears to hinder students from taking a critical approach to authority.
