Abstract
English abstract When Stories Become Theory: A Conceptual Analysis of Socialcognitive Theory and Motivation This article critically examines Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) as an explanatory model for motivation and behavior, with particular focus on the concepts of agency and self-efficacy. Using the method of conceptual analysis, the study evaluates the theory’s internal logic and its assumptions about human action, cognition, and free will. The analysis reveals that SCT relies on concepts that are often ambiguously defined and used in ways that create the appearance of explanation without offering genuine insight. It is argued that the theory presupposes mental mechanisms that themselves require explanation, and that the link between thought and action remains insufficiently clarified. The article concludes that SCT is better understood as a narrative about motivation rather than a scientific explanation. This critique does not reject the role of cognition in behavior, but calls for clearer conceptual foundations and explanatory frameworks.
