Aesthetic apprehension: the almost-absence of dodecaphonism in the repertory of the greatest orchestras, in the season of 2017-2018
Abstract
This article presents results of a quantitative approach of basic nature with a descriptive purpose and a procedure of data collection in electronic research, by compiling information of the Official Sites of the sample selected for the research. The aim of this work is finding out how often the repertory of works that belong to the artistic movement called Dodecaphonism performed by the great orchestras in the world, in the season of 2017-2018, in comparison with the frequency of the repertory execution that belonged to other periods and musical styles. Therefore, the population of the 20 best orchestras chosen by Gramophone Magazine in 2008 was a sufficiently large sample considering the four best symphony orchestras in the world. The technique of data processing and analysis was performed in three stages: Establishment of categories (composers which works were performed by orchestras were distributed according to their historical and stylistic periods) Encoding and tabulation (the orchestra performed by a given composer on a concert day) Statistical analysis of data (by the Ordinal Scale, to show that the choice of a composer's work or period implies an aesthetic option through the repertory of certain musical ages and/or styles instead of others – here, in particular, the twelve-tone ones).
