Abstract

Muay Thai demands intensive physical and mental training. A coach's interpersonal communication strategies play a crucial role in shaping an athlete's motivation, discipline, and performance achievements. This study aims to analyze the interpersonal communication strategies employed by Muay Thai coaches at the Sukabumi City Branch Association to support athlete performance development. A qualitative method utilizing a case study approach was adopted. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation, and subsequently validated using triangulation techniques. The results indicate that coaches implement five elements of interpersonal communication (DeVito, 2001; modified by Liliweri, 1997): openness, empathy, supportiveness, equality, and a positive attitude. Communication strategies encompass message planning, media selection (face-to-face and digital), timing, and delivery styles tailored to each athlete's personality. Facilitating factors include emotional closeness and shared motivation, while obstacles include differences in athlete personalities, competitive pressure, and limited training time. The study concludes that effective interpersonal communication strategies by coaches can foster harmonious relationships, boost motivation, and support the performance achievements of Muay Thai athletes at the Sukabumi City Branch Association.
