Abstract

Family centre refers to a service entity which coordinates basic- and specialised-level social and health services for children, adolescents, and families, as well as services provided by municipalities, parishes, the private sector, and the third sector. A family centre is an integrated service system, and this study focuses on integration and intersectoral collaboration. The research is necessary in order to obtain data for organising management and services into a functional whole. Studies related to family centres have indicated the need for further research on the role and tasks of family centre managers. With the introduction of wellbeing services counties, as well as the social and health care reform, the structures and management of family centres are changing. The wellbeing services counties themselves define how the family centre model is organised within their area. This study examines what kinds of service entities are arranged in wellbeing services counties and how their strategic and operative management is executed. The data were collected via the family centre survey conducted by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare in 2024, to which all wellbeing services counties and the City of Helsinki responded (N=22). The data were analysed using the typology method. According to the results, family centre services can be found in all wellbeing services counties, but there were major differences in the services themselves and in the cooperation between different actors. The strategic and operational management of the family centre was carried out in both small and large multiprofessional groups, but also in a form in which the decision-making groups did not include any representation from municipalities or from the third sector. No common aspects regarding management were found within service entities. The results can be utilised in developing the structures of social welfare organisation management and the family centre operating model, as well as in increasing cooperation between different actors.
