Abstract

This study aimeds to develop a Subject-Specific Advanced Course to enhance subject expertise in Technology Education and overcome the limitations of convergence-type courses, following the introduction of School Autonomous Hours in the 2022 Revised National Curriculum. Here, School Autonomous Hours refer to regular class hours allocated to schools and teachers to autonomously design and operate curriculum, thus promoting educational decentralization. To this end, a developmental research method was employed, involving a literature review and field application with teachers. The study modified an existing “Subject Convergence Elective Course Development Model” to be applicable to “Subject-Specific Advanced Courses,” proposing a “Development Model for Courses in Middle School Autonomous Hours.” Based on this model, the curriculum and learning materials for the advanced technology course, “Architectural Design of the School for All,” were developed through the stages of preparation, planning, development, application, and evaluation. The results are as follows: First, achievement standards and a content system were established to address school space issues by reflecting the core values of the future society, such as universal design, school safety, and eco-friendly architecture. Second, a self-developed workbook designed to replace textbooks was created and utilized after deliberation by the School Management Committee. Furthermore, the course secured institutional validity by obtaining approval from the Superintendent of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education in 2024. Third, the course was operated during School Autonomous Hours for first-year students at 'S' Middle School in Seoul. Feedback on the overall curriculum, learning materials, and learner interest was collected and used to refine the course for future implementation. The study is significant in that it provides a practical framework for teachers to demonstrate their expertise as curriculum developers through a standardized procedure for developing subject-specific advanced courses. Additionally, it contributes by developing a curriculum and learning materials for a technology --advanced course that are readily applicable within School Autonomous Hours.
