Abstract

Adam Przeworski offers an intellectual assessment of decades of research on democracy. He argues that democracy survives when elections process conflicts without the costs at stake being high enough to lead actors to prefer violence over accepting the result. Historical evidence shows that high per capita income and accumulated democratic experience are its most robust predictors. Constitutionalism imposes formal limits on majorities but does not guarantee its effectiveness as a barrier. The rise of Trump —improbable in light of the theory— is tentatively linked to the emergence of technological sectors that, by not depending on mass labor, alter elite incentives against democracy. The text concludes by acknowledging an explanatory gap in the face of this phenomenon.
