Abstract

The Fraunhofer Institute for Nondestructive Testing (IZFP), headquartered in Germany, uses modeling and simulation in applied research focusing on the development of intelligent sensor and data systems for safety, sustainability, and efficiency. Sascha Thieltges of IZFP spoke with COMSOL about his team’s work in corrosion detection. This blog post introduces a method for detecting corrosion in embedded pressure pipelines through guided waves excited by electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT)-based systems. Get an introduction to the design challenges and risks associated with these pipeline systems, as well as the underlying analytical and numerical considerations. The blog post then demonstrates the analysis of a guided wave modeling problem in the COMSOL Multiphysics® software.
