Reactive-transport processes at lithological boundaries: insights from experiments, natural samples, and numerical modeling
Abstract
The increasing amount of thermodynamic data on rock-forming minerals has facilitated the prediction of stable mineral assemblages within the Earth’s interior, based on bulk rock chemistry and thermal structure. However, at boundaries between chemically contrasting rocks, reactions and mass transport become coupled. This metasomatism induces dehydration reactions that cannot be predicted by individual facies compositions alone, yet they influence seismicity, arc volcanism, slab–mantle coupling, and global material cycling, including the deep carbon cycle. This paper introduces findings from hydrothermal experiments, natural sample analyses, and numerical simulations to elucidate the mechanisms of the metasomatism and the reactive-transport processes at lithological boundaries in the subduction zones and the oceanic lithosphere.
