Pola Asuh Orang Tua Siswa Disabilitas Rungu dalam Memberikan Pencegahan Mengakses Konten Negatif Media Sosial di Era Digital
Abstract
The rapid development of digital technology has made social media an inseparable part of adolescents’ lives, including students with hearing disabilities, who tend to rely on visual-based platforms such as TikTok. While social media offers opportunities for entertainment and learning, it also poses risks related to inappropriate content and negative online behavior. This study aims to describe parental parenting patterns in supervising social media use among students with hearing disabilities, identify communication strategies used by parents, and examine obstacles faced in preventing access to negative content. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach conducted in a special school and the home environment in Tebo Regency, involving a hearing-impaired student, parents, and a class teacher selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, questionnaires, and documentation, and analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that parents tend to apply a democratic parenting style characterized by controlled freedom, emotional support, and active involvement in supervising social media use. Parents use visual communication, sign language, and written explanations to convey ethical and safe social media behavior, which supports better self-control, social interaction, and open communication in children. However, parents still face challenges related to limited time and communication barriers in explaining abstract concepts of digital ethics. In conclusion, democratic parenting combined with adaptive communication strategies plays an important role in preventing negative social media exposure among students with hearing disabilities.
