Global South Urbanisms
Abstract
This Special Issue of Urban Matters centers on five in‑depth interviews with scholars whose work challenges Western-centric urban theory and expands the horizons of Global South Urbanism. Each conversation brings a distinct positionality, methodology, and embodied knowledge to questions of epistemic injustice, comparative urbanism, and the limits and possibilities of the “global South” as an analytical frame. From explorations of critical ontology and postcoloniality to interrogations of technology, infrastructure, everyday struggle, and creative methodologies, the interviews collectively illuminate how diverse urban experiences can pluralize the field and unsettle dominant epistemic hierarchies. Together, they offer readers a rich, multi-voiced reflection on how urban studies can move toward more grounded, relational, and equitable knowledge production.
