Abstract

Objective: This study investigates the application of geodetic techniques in monitoring the Chasqueiro Dam, in Arroio Grande–RS, with the aim of evaluating the performance, accuracy, and efficiency of the three-dimensional (3D) radiation method using two manual total stations. Theoretical Framework: The research is grounded in concepts of dam auscultation (instrumentation/monitoring) and geodetic monitoring. It addresses the operating principles of total stations, the atmospheric effects on electronic measurements, and the fundamentals of 3D coordinate determination. Method: The methodology consisted of establishing geodetic control points and conducting five monitoring campaigns using the Geomax Zoom10 and Leica TS07 total stations. Three-dimensional coordinates were obtained using the 3D radiation method, utilizing prisms distributed along the dam crest. The coordinates were adjusted to the Local Topographic Plane and compared between campaigns to detect spatial variations. Results and Discussion: The analyses revealed maximum discrepancies of 44 mm for the Geomax Zoom10 and 87,77 mm for the Leica TS07. These variations were primarily associated with systematic errors, such as sighting inaccuracies, improper orientation, and operational limitations. The discussion highlights the influence of field procedures on the quality of the results. Research Implications: The study confirms the feasibility of 3D radiation for monitoring earth dams, provided it is accompanied by operational rigor. Theoretically, it contributes to the improvement of geodetic techniques. Originality/Value: The originality lies in the comparative evaluation of two models of total stations under real-world conditions, offering insights to improve geodetic monitoring practices applied to dam safety.
