Abstract

Objective: This study aims to understand the perception of residents of Ananindeua, Pará (PA), regarding solid waste management in the municipality by assessing their level of knowledge, involvement, and satisfaction with the public policies implemented. Theoretical Framework: The research is grounded in concepts of sustainability, solid waste management, and citizen participation, referencing authors such as Fritjof Capra and his ideas on systemic interconnection, as well as legal frameworks like the National Solid Waste Policy (Law No. 12,305/2010). Method: A mixed-method approach combining quantitative and qualitative techniques was employed. Data collection involved structured questionnaires administered to a sample of 472 residents and semi-structured interviews with municipal managers. The analysis was based on descriptive statistics and content analysis. Results and Discussion: The findings reveal a predominantly negative perception among residents regarding the efficiency of solid waste management, highlighting deficiencies in selective waste collection and environmental education. However, the results also emphasize the population’s interest in more actively participating in sustainable initiatives. The discussion contextualizes these findings within the theoretical framework, highlighting structural and cultural challenges. Research Implications: This study provides insights for improving public policies on solid waste management, emphasizing the need for awareness campaigns and strengthening community engagement. Originality/Value: This work contributes by exploring the residents' perspective on a critical topic for sustainable urban development, identifying areas for improvement and aligning results with sustainable development goals.
