Abstract

Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the feasibility of implementing a photovoltaic power generation system at Campus II of the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas. This campus serves the teaching and research area and the hospital area occupied by the Celso Pierro Hospital and Maternity Ward (HMCP). Theoretical Framework: Given the growth in electricity consumption, it is necessary to develop and apply alternative energy sources with a sustainable objective. Method: Energy is supplied by Companhia Paulista de Força e Luz (CPFL) from a single power source to the main cabin. The main cabin feeds the secondary distribution cabins, some of which are interconnected with diesel generators. This study evaluates the implementation of a photovoltaic solar energy supply system as a complement to the CPFL supply and begins by understanding the behavior of current energy consumption. In this sense, the internal consumption of the different activity sectors was monitored to identify the criticality of those with the highest consumption. Results and Discussion: This research presents, in the analysis stage, the behavior of the energy supplied to Campus II of PUC Campinas. Internal distribution is evaluated based on monitoring the demand and consumption of all main substations. The internal energy distribution substations are positioned to provide energy distribution to two main areas, which are the Hospital area and the University area. As the University area is the object of study in this work and evaluating the consumption and demand of cabins 4, 5, and 8, it was pointed out that the UF (utilization factor) of the University cabins are: cabin 4 operates at 68.00%, cabin 5 operates at 88.30%, and cabin 8 operates at 13.10%. Internal optimizations were proposed with the aim of improving the distribution and utilization factor of the cabins in the University area. Given the need for expansion, studies indicate that dividing the power supply could make more power available to the hospital and improve optimization and distribution for the university area, with the option of supplementing the power supply through photovoltaic solar panels to generate electricity from solar energy. Research Implications: Based on this data, improvements were proposed to more efficiently serve critical sectors, in accordance with the ABNT NBR ISO 50001:2018 standard. The improvement proposals considered were: changing the usage policy, replacing inefficient equipment, and integrating with a system for alternative energy generation. Originality/Value: This work is expected to develop suggestions that will contribute to reducing costs and increasing the level of service for users.
