Convergence of International ESG Standards: Interfaces Between Risk Management, Sustainability, and Governance
Abstract
Objectives: This article aims to analyze the interconnection between international and national standards that underpin the implementation of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategies, examining how these frameworks contribute to risk management, materiality assessment, and the strengthening of corporate governance. Theoretical Framework: The study is grounded in the guidelines of ISO 31000:2018, ISO 31010:2019, ISO IWA 48:2024, ISO 26000:2010, and ABNT PR 2030:2022, understood as complementary frameworks that support the integration of sustainability principles into organizational decision-making processes. Method: A qualitative and exploratory approach is adopted, based on documentary and comparative analysis of the selected standards. The analysis focuses on identifying conceptual convergences, shared principles, and practical mechanisms for ESG implementation. Results and Discussion: The findings indicate a high degree of complementarity among the analyzed frameworks, demonstrating their combined potential to guide the identification, assessment, and prioritization of ESG-related risks and opportunities, as well as to align materiality, strategy, and governance structures. Research Implications: The study contributes to organizational practice by offering an integrated interpretation of ESG-related standards, facilitating their application across organizations of different sizes and sectors. Originality/Value: This research proposes a structured model for the integrated application of ESG standards, enhancing the understanding of their articulation and strategic value within contemporary corporate contexts.
