Abstract

This article analyzes the complete cycle of social mobility for ethnic minorities in China through the higher education system, from university admission (access) to employment (outcome). Despite large-scale preferential policies (such as the “bonus points” policy), the research reveals a paradox of this policy: quantitative growth in the number of minority students does not eliminate the qualitative gap in access to elite universities. Based on the analysis of empirical data and case studies, the article identifies a three-stage system of barriers: 1) at the access stage – structural barriers (linguistic, economic, regional) and “elite capture” within the minority groups themselves; 2) during the academic process – problems of academic adaptation; 3) at the outcome stage – statistical discrimination in the labor market, diploma devaluation, and forced return migration accompanied by a wage penalty. The author concludes that upward social mobility for many minority graduates remains limited and ambiguous.
