Abstract

The article examines the mismatch between the formal requirements imposed on international students in universities of the Republic of Korea and the actual competencies needed for successful adaptation to the Korean academic environment. The study focuses on the educational and cultural integration of foreign students enrolled in Korean-language and English-language academic tracks. The aim of the research is to identify key adaptation challenges, assess the impact of implicit academic expectations, and determine the differences in adaptation experiences between students of the two tracks. The methodological framework includes an analysis of contemporary literature on intercultural adaptation, participant observation of teaching practices, a survey of international students, and a series of interviews. This comprehensive approach made it possible to reveal not only objective barriers but also students’ subjective perceptions, which directly shape their educational experience. The findings demonstrate that students of both tracks encounter significant difficulties, such as insufficient academic vocabulary, unfamiliar classroom communication structures, and a lack of adapted learning materials. At the same time, students of English-medium programs face a specific challenge – the formation of a “cultural bubble” that limits their interaction with Korean society and hinders deeper integration. The novelty of this research lies in the comparative analysis of two educational trajectories, which makes it possible to more precisely identify the nature of adaptation difficulties and show that the challenges faced by students in different tracks do not always overlap and therefore require differentiated solutions. The conclusion emphasizes the practical significance of the results: the identified barriers can be used to improve support programs for international students, increase the transparency of academic expectations, and develop more effective intercultural educational strategies in Korean universities.
