Abstract
This article summarizes Canada's experience in shaping and developing the concept of intercultural education. The author examines the historical, socio-political background of the development of intercultural education concept. The study focuses on the special features of the intercultural education concept as a strategy for fostering national unity while preserving societal diversity. The aim of the work is to identify the specifics of intercultural education and identify the advantages of this concept, which are relevant to the current situation in Russian society and education. The methodological basis of the study consists of an analysis of the works of Russian and international authors devoted to the study of the essence of the concept of intercultural education and intercultural pedagogy. The obtained results demonstrate that Canada's diversity has been shaped by the complex relationship between two main ethnic groups: English and French Canadians. The appeal to the policy of interculturalism of the French-speaking provinces was due to several reasons: the desire to counter the policy of multiculturalism with their own concept and thus draw attention to the characteristics and needs of their ethnic community, and the desire to solve the problem of societal diversity in their own way, taking into account the characteristics of the region of residence as much as possible. The policy of intercultural education is based on a strategy of accommodation – the mutual adaptation of cultural majorities and ethnic minorities, presupposing a reasonable balance between the rights to diversity and adherence to common norms. Intercultural education policy addresses the question of reasonable limitations in the implementation of pluralistic ideas and emphasizes fundamental educational values, which distinguishes it from existing Western concepts of multiculturalism. Thus, the intercultural approach offers a realistic path to accommodation through finding a balance between diverse demands. The novelty of this study lies in identifying the specifics of the Canadian concept of interculturality as a practical approach oriented toward dialogue, interaction, and social cohesion, focused on maintaining societal unity.
