Abstract

Background: Anaphylaxis is an unpredictable medical emergency, and preparation is key to ensure optimal outcomes. Children with food allergy spend a large portion of their time in schools, so precautions and management plans should be in place to create safe learning environments. Methods: This review will discuss recent publications pertaining managing food allergy and anaphylaxis in schools and community settings. Results: Guidelines support training for school staff as well as stocking undesignated epinephrine devices. Open communication and partnership among families, physicians, and schools is essential. Anaphylaxis can also occur in other community settings, e.g., restaurants, and during travel. Conclusion: Maintaining vigilance with allergen avoidance and having epinephrine devices available at all times are important measures to ensure that patients and families can fully enjoy social and recreational activities.
