Abstract
AbstractThe teaching–learning process of architecture faces an evolving context and ideal architectural, urban, climatic, and social scenarios that urgently need to be addressed. In a whirlwind world characterized by constant transformations, educational institutions responsible for architectural education must train well-rounded professionals capable of addressing current and future challenges through the integration of theoretical and heuristic knowledge, with the aim of proposing and promoting fair, sustainable, equitable, and utopian solutions that foster human well-being. For this reason, the present text invites reflection on the disciplinary and holistic training of architecture students at a public university and its relationship with the aforementioned circumstances and issues. It also brings into question the current curriculum and its contents, examining whether they exhibit visionary and interdisciplinary characteristics that encourage a critical—and above all, problem-solving—mindset. Through a mixed-methods study conducted with students, the research determines how prepared they are to address the problems, challenges, and demands of the profession in the near future, while also exploring the relevance of the design themes developed in project-based studios and whether these respond to contemporary needs. Faculty members are also interviewed in this regard. Future professionals face a complex panorama; therefore, the study proposes simple teaching–learning and holistic training strategies that can be implemented in schools of architecture, as well as within curricula—some of which may already be obsolete. Keywords: Utopia, teaching–learning, education/training, architecture, challenge
