Lichen aureus in childhood: a diagnosis to be recognized
Abstract
Lichen aureus is a rare form of pigmented purpuric dermatosis, which is uncommon in children. This report aims to present a case of Lichen aureus on the lower limb of a pediatric patient, highlighting its clinical presentation, diagnosis, and therapeutic management. The case involves a 6-year-old female patient who had developed cutaneous lesions on her right lower limb two years prior, which progressively increased in number and size. The lesions, characterized by erythematous, purpuric, and brownish macules, some with a lichenoid surface, coalescing into a broad band, were subjected to dermoscopic examination and skin biopsy, confirming the diagnosis of Lichen aureus. Oral prednisone and colchicine were initiated as treatment, leading to satisfactory control of the lesions. In this context, Lichen aureus presents diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, particularly in pediatric cases. This case underscores the need for special attention to the clinical features of the disease to facilitate diagnostic recognition in pediatric care settings. Although the prognosis is generally favorable, lesion regression may result in unaesthetic stains that can have psychosocial repercussions for patients. The authors declare no conflicts of interest.
