Propulsion Research and Academic Programs at UAH, Space Nuclear Propulsion Focus – 2025
Abstract
The Propulsion Research Center (PRC) is in its 34rd year at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). The mission of the Propulsion Research Center is to provide an environment that connects the academic research community with the needs and concerns of the propulsion community while promoting an interdisciplinary approach to solving propulsion problems. The paper overviews the current organization and summarizes metrics on graduate student production, research funding, and refereed publications. This paper also summarizes the technical history, current research, and future directions of the PRC’s growing work in Space Nuclear Propulsion. Over the past 10 years, the PRC has experienced an average of $300k yearly increase in research expenditures. Research expenditures from external sources over the past 34 years have been 90 million dollars and have produced over 465 advanced degrees. PRC researchers have also made significant contributions to peer-reviewed publications as a result of these research programs. The PRC has a rich heritage for performing fundamental and applied research which contributes to workforce development in the propulsion and energy fields.
