Abstract

Integrating MBSE (Model Based Systems Engineering) and MDAO (Multidisciplinary Design Analysis and Optimization) has become of prominent interest in the design of complex systems. With this capability, requirements can be mapped to constraints for the MDAO, and there can be validation and traceability of the optimized results back to the requirements. These are important capabilities that are needed when trying to model and size complex systems. The specific complex system that this integrated workflow will be applied to is the power architecture for a lunar base. A lunar base relies on systems that use different amounts of energy at different times of the day. With this integrated workflow, an optimum size for the power systems can be found that also stays within the requirements. To implement this workflow, an integrated solution between the MBSE tool CATIA Magic and an optimization tool for space systems known as DYREQT (Dynamic Rocket EQuation Tool) will first be established. Given this solution, an architecture of the power system model will be built in CATIA Magic, and its corresponding sizing variables will be optimized using DYREQT. With this approach, the robustness and resiliency of the power architecture can be analyzed through a scenario-based tradespace exploration.
