Anticipatory Control to Support High Density, Mixed Mode Air Traffic
Abstract
A method for identifying and controlling unlikely but unpreventable collisions between aircraft in dense airspace is presented. This method is useful for high density air traffic regions in which some of the air traffic may be autonomous. Management of these situations is shown to require human air traffic controllers, retaining their expertise while both leveraging highly automated traffic management systems and ensuring the safety of air traffic. The concept is currently at TRL 2 or 3, with additional technological support required for moving it to a higher TRL.
