Expanding the STEM Talent Pipeline Through Cross-Functional Internships: A Systems-Based Approach to K–12 and Postsecondary Workforce Development
Abstract
The Digital Transformation Center (DTC), a collaborative hub of industry, government (USAF), and academia, addresses the critical workforce shortage of technical workers in the Dayton region by deploying a comprehensive talent pipeline strategy. Central to this strategy is the cross-functional internship program, which utilizes a project-based approach to tackle real-world digital transformation (DT) challenges, such as the Aeroprint Drone and the Windmill Challenge Scaling. This model intentionally combines students from diverse disciplines (e.g., Computer Science, Education, and Communications) to foster interdisciplinary teamwork and "diversity of thought," which interns reported as the most valuable aspect of their experience. The program's design successfully serves as a talent pipeline and a proving ground for effective DT work methodologies, offering a unique, replicable model for developing the collaborative and skilled workforce necessary to champion digital transformation across the entire enterprise.
