Abstract

The Purdue Aeronautics Common Teaching Model (PACTM) presents a digital twin framework for aerospace engineering education that connects theoretical analysis with practical application. This paper describes the methodology for creating a digital teaching model based on the constraints and mission profiles of a senior capstone design course. Rather than using isolated simulations, the PACTM development mirrors "Design, Build, Fly" assignments and integrates multidisciplinary domains, including CAD, aerodynamic stability analysis, and structural sizing, utilizing hand calculation simulations based on course assignments. The framework is designed to be extensible and ready to be linked with higher-fidelity models. The study outlines the workflow for combining these digital components and validating them against real-world telemetry data from student-operated aircraft. By aligning the model creation with the requirements of the senior design project, this approach establishes a platform-agnostic framework for teaching systems engineering. This ensures that students work with a digital twin that is theoretically sound and synchronized with the physical aircraft.
