Purdue Aeronautics Common Teaching Model: Improving Knowledge Transfer Across the Aerospace Curriculum
Abstract
The Purdue Aeronautics Common Teaching Model (PATCM) proposes a new educational framework to improve knowledge transfer within the aerospace engineering curriculum. Engineering programs often teach topics in isolation, making it difficult for students to connect concepts from different courses. To address this, the PATCM introduces a single digital aircraft model that is integrated across multiple academic levels, from sophomore mechanics to senior design. This paper describes the methodology for creating assignments that explicitly connect theoretical analysis with practical digital simulation. Furthermore, the study addresses the practical challenges of implementation, specifically offering strategies to overcome resistance from both faculty and students regarding the adoption of new educational technologies. By providing specific examples of integrated coursework and a clear plan for future assessment, the paper demonstrates how the PATCM serves as tool to modernize engineering education.
