Iterative Design With Validation and Verification of an Additively Manufactured Stagnation Pressure Probe for a Transonic Axial Compressor
Abstract
Ongoing work accomplished by the Naval Postgraduate School Turbopropulsion Laboratory indicates the need for greater accuracy in experimental data acquisition. This study focuses on gaining an understanding of flow recirculation within a yawed cylinder, with the ultimate goal of designing and fabricating a set of highly adaptable stagnation pressure probe rakes for use in a Transonic Axial Compressor Rig (TCR). This work follows a detailed iterative design process that integrates Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), wind tunnel experimentation, additive manufacturing, and test rig implementation. The presented final design is capable of operating at angles of incidence up to 50◦ and across Mach numbers ranging from 0.03 to approximately 1.2, meeting the performance demonstrated by commercially available probes.
