Abstract

Cohesive zone modeling strategies are investigated and applied in the analysis of bonded composite joints. Three finite element models, each representing a different level of model fidelity, are developed and used to predict the structural response of T-joints subjected to pull-off loading. Cohesive model parameters are calibrated using experimental data from mode I and mode II coupon fracture tests. Following coupon-level calibration, cohesive parameters are then transferred to the T-joint models from which predictions are established. Experimental and numerical comparisons are made for pristine and defective T-joints subjected to pull-off loading. Comparisons are made in terms of force-displacement response, joint strength, and damage pattern. Furthermore, prediction accuracy, run-time, and development complexity of the modeling strategies are compared.
