Evaluation of Conflict Management Services for AAM via Simulation and Flight Test
Abstract
To promote the adoption of advanced air mobility (AAM), particularly during the early to middle stages of maturity, it is necessary to account for its unique operational limitations, such as short flight endurance due to battery capacity constraints and limited vertiport resources for accommodating turnarounds. Thus, this study evaluated urban air traffic management (UATM) services to address such limitations, mainly focusing on pre-flight conflict management in the air and on the ground. Specifically, the quantitative performance of the developed conflict management services (CMS) was evaluated through fast-time simulations that accounted for departure delays and wind-induced in-flight delays. In addition, the practical validity of CMS operational procedures and the overall feasibility of the interconnected systems, such as a UATM system, vertiport automation system, and AAM operators’ systems, were assessed through flight tests conducted in a live-virtual environment. Through these tests, the feasibility and robustness of the developed CMS were confirmed.
