Effects of Numerical Dissipation on Wall-modeled Large Eddy Simulation of High Reynolds Number Hypersonic Flows
Abstract
In this work, we assess Wall-modeled Large Eddy Simulation (WMLES) for two spatially developing hypersonic flat-plate boundary layers at Mach 10.9 and Mach 13.6, using recent DNS datasets from Duan et al. A set of numerical experiments are performed to examine grid-convergence behavior, the influence of wall-model scaling, and sensitivities to numerical dissipation and subgrid-scale modeling. The results demonstrate that with appropriate wall-model scaling, grid resolution, and controlled dissipation, WMLES can accurately reproduce DNS skin-friction and heat-flux trends, whereas suboptimal wall-modeling or excessive dissipation can lead to significant deviations in boundary-layer development.
