Abstract

Tests and analyses in KHI’s research to explore processes towards achieving Certification by Analysis (CbA) to determine a 1G stall speed are presented. Building on a precise definition of CbA, we established both the computational model and methodology necessary for the CbA process. A series of aerodynamic and structural tests, which are considered essential to validate the computational model and methodology, are carried out. They include a wind tunnel test considered as a virtual flight test with a scale model regarded as a virtual aircraft. Then, we successfully obtained essential experimental data required for stall speed determination. Furthermore, as a preliminary step, we conducted CFD, CSD, and CFD-CSD coupled analyses to simulate 1G stall conditions of the scaled aircraft, which showed reasonable agreement with the experimental results for both aerodynamic and structural characteristics. Then, we confirmed the effectiveness of our approach in stall speed determination by analysis.
