The Moving Shocks in the Ethylene Transverse Jets in Supersonic Crossflow
Abstract
This paper presents the features and effects of moving shocks in ethylene transverse jets in supersonic crossflow (TJISC). Besides the common shock structures identified in TJISC, a series of additional moving shocks were observed from previous ethylene TJISC consecutive high-speed schlieren images. These moving shocks formed because the shear layer vortices were traveling at supersonic speeds with respect to the surrounding crossflow fluids. The shock locations were identified through the schlieren images, and the velocities were calculated based on the shock structure trajectory. These additional shocks significantly reduce the freestream momentum and introduce strong unsteadiness to the flow field. Therefore, the fuel injection scheme should be designed to avoid the formation of these moving shocks.
