Feasibility Study on Liquid Hydrogen-Cooled Superconducting Motors for Zero-Emission Aviation
Abstract
Progress is being made in the technological development of electrification systems to improve fuel efficiency and the application of hydrogen in the next generation of passenger aircraft in the 2030s. This paper summarizes the key aspects of our research on aero electric engines and their impact on sustainable aviation. We have made significant advancements in superconducting motor architecture. This includes the concept of a lightweight motor, weighing under 70 kilograms, integrated with a hydrogen tank to achieve a remarkable output of 2 MW. The stator utilizes SCSC cables, while the rotor employs an innovative flux-concentrated type field design. These advancements make it feasible to replace turboprop engines in regional aircraft with pure electric propulsion systems, paving the way for zero-emission air transport.
