WITHDRAWN: Uncertainty Quantification of Homogenization-Based Micromechanical Properties of Fiber Reinforced Composites
Abstract
This study presents a comprehensive framework for uncertainty quantification (UQ) of homogenized micromechanical properties in fiber-reinforced composites using representative volume elements (RVEs). RVEs are widely used to estimate ply-level properties based on constituent materials such as fibers and matrix. However, the accuracy of these estimates is significantly influenced by the type of geometrical fiber arrangement commonly square, diamond, or hexagonal and by uncertainties in the material properties of the constituents. To address this, the proposed framework evaluates the effects of combined material and geometrical uncertainties on the homogenized elastic constants. A sparse polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) method efficiently propagates uncertainties and quantifies their impacts. Furthermore, a probability density function (PDF)-based fusion technique is introduced to integrate the PDFs generated from different RVE geometries into a single unified representation. Six homogenized micromechanical properties are examined to assess the variability resulting from input uncertainties and geometric configurations. The results demonstrate that the variability in constituent properties and the chosen RVE shape significantly affect the micromechanical predictions. The study concludes that accurately representing fiber arrangement uncertainties is essential for reliable stiffness estimation and deeper insight into the mechanical behavior of composite materials.
