Abstract

This study evaluates the ability of FlightStream, an efficient panel-method flow solver, to predict the static and dynamic stability derivatives of the NASA Common Research Model with flexible wings. To balance computational efficiency with accuracy, a pseudo-steady-state approach is employed for dynamic derivative calculations, leveraging boundary condition modifications to simulate rotational effects. Results show that FlightStream predictions align well with both wind tunnel data and computational results from the 2nd AIAA Stability & Control Prediction Workshop. The pseudo-steady-state approach proved effective for computing dynamic derivatives, achieving comparable accuracy to time-accurate methods while significantly achieving full-vehicle simulation times in seconds on regular computational hardware. These findings validate FlightStream as a rapid and reliable tool for stability and control analysis, making it particularly valuable for early-stage aircraft design and flight simulation applications. Future work will focus on improving unsteady flow modeling capabilities to extend the physics of the approach to time-domain simulations.
