Abstract

The Energy Matter Interaction Tunnel (EMIT) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is a high-throughput hypersonic test facility designed to address critical limitations in traditional ground testing for hypersonic-relevant materials. EMIT combines precise control of flight-relevant conditions, including material heating and shear forces, with advanced optical diagnostics to enable detailed investigations of material behavior and failure mechanisms. Key diagnostics include Laser-Based Ultrasonics (LBU) for real-time monitoring of internal material deformation, Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) for spatially resolved measurements of ablated species, and infrared absorption spectroscopy for thermodynamic characterization of gas-phase phenomena. Together, these techniques provide complementary insights into material performance and flow dynamics, facilitating rapid material evaluation and diagnostic refinement. Recent advancements include the deployment of LIF and IR absorption measurements directly on samples tested in EMIT, marking a critical step toward understanding ablation dynamics and flow-material interactions under hypersonic conditions.
