Abstract

This paper surveys hypersonic wind tunnel configurations, including quiet tunnels, shock tunnels, arc-heated tunnels, and blowdown tunnels, analyzing their operating principles, Mach ranges, energy sources, and applications. Over 20 key facilities are highlighted, emphasizing their role in advancing research in boundary-layer transition, thermal protection, and material performance. The study aims to benchmark capabilities and identify gaps in infrastructure.
