Abstract

Edge Artificial Intelligence (Edge AI) is rapidly transforming space system architectures by enabling advanced computational capabilities and actionable intelligence directly at the source of data generation. This paper explores the deployment of AI algorithms on satellites, spacecraft, landers, and rovers, highlighting how Edge AI empowers real-time data processing, autonomous decision-making, and enhanced system resilience in challenging environments. Recent advancements in hardware and software integration are discussed, with case studies from NASA’s Mars rovers, the LOFTID mission, and Sidus Space’s LizzieSat-1 illustrating successful implementation in both satellite operations and deep space missions. The integration of Edge AI has led to significant improvements in mission efficiency, autonomy, and scientific productivity, reducing latency for communication and safety while enabling next-generation space exploration. The paper concludes by underscoring the revolutionary potential of Edge AI to reshape future space missions, with emerging platforms promising even greater autonomy, adaptability, and data processing capabilities
