Peridynamic Analysis of Damage and Failure in Composite Laminates During Open-Hole Compression Test
Abstract
This study investigates the initiation and progression of damage in composite laminates subjected to open-hole compression (OHC) loading using a peridynamics (PD) framework. The objective is to assess the ability of PD to capture complex failure mechanisms and to compare its predictive accuracy with previously published experimental and numerical results. The PD model effectively represents the onset and evolution of intralaminar damage, such as shear-driven nonlinearity, kink-band failure, and matrix cracking, as well as interlaminar failure mechanisms such as delamination. Both qualitative and quantitative comparisons show that PD offers advantages in representing discontinuities and interacting damage modes without mesh-dependent artifacts or predefined crack paths. The findings demonstrate the potential of PD as a robust numerical tool to simulate OHC behavior in laminated composites.
