Abstract

The HyDroQuad is a hybrid robotic platform designed to address mobility challenges on extraterrestrial surfaces by combining the capabilities of both a four-legged robot and an aerial drone. This system aims to provide versatile locomotion strategies, including traversing difficult terrain through walking or jumping, and even taking flights when needed. The focus of the research is evaluating the practical feasibility of the HyDroQuad through analytical approaches to estimate critical performance metrics, such as required thrust, payload capacity, and flight endurance. Specifically, the thrust capability per motor is first computed from propeller dimensions and motor specifications, subsequently scaled by the number of motors to estimate total lift. Advanced engineering software tools, including SolidWorks and Ansys, facilitate the optimization of structural design, material selection, payload distribution, and aerodynamic analyses of propeller airflow interactions. This comprehensive evaluation informs the assessment of HyDroQuad’s potential utility for future planetary exploration missions.
