Mesh Adaptation via Local Operations and Local Remeshing for Problems With Large Deformations
Abstract
Mesh adaptation plays a critical role in dynamic mesh simulations involving large deformations. Conventional approaches usually employ either local mesh operations or local remeshing to preserve element quality. As the deformation intensifies, these approaches often lose effectiveness, leading to a rapid degradation of mesh quality. In this work, a mesh adaptation method is proposed that combines local operations with local remeshing in a sequential manner. At each deformation step, an optimized combination of local operations is applied to enhance element quality. When these operations are insufficient, a local remeshing procedure is triggered. To support robust remeshing, a cavity construction technique is employed to generate a continuous and smooth region. The proposed method is evaluated using two three-dimensional large-deformation test cases. The results demonstrate that the method can effectively maintain acceptable mesh quality under severe deformations, indicating its reliability for dynamic mesh simulations.
