A Novel Hybrid Auxetic Topology Under Axial Loading: Finite Element Numerical Simulation and Experimental Analysis under Quasi-Static and Fatigue Loading
Abstract
The existing literature strongly supports auxetic structures’ excellent energy absorption capabilities in various engineering applications, attributed to their characteristic negative Poisson’s ratio (NPR) effect. However, traditional auxetic structures often exhibit bending-dominated deformation mechanisms, which result in a lack of stiffness. To address this limitation, the researchers developed an auxetic structure based on a hybridized star and arrowhead unit cell (SAH) that combines high stiffness, ductility, and enhanced energy absorption by incorporating an engineered link beam and supporting braces. Comparative Poisson’s ratio calculations were performed on a 3×9 lattice to account for Saint Venant’s Principle, while stiffness, ductility, and energy absorption were evaluated using a quarter-cell model. this novel topology exhibits significantly improved stiffness, local ductility, and energy absorption, with comparable fatigue behavior to the original SAH design, making it a promising candidate for advanced engineering applications.
