Development of Dandelion-Inspired Drones: Dandidrones
Abstract
We present recent progress in the development of a novel ultra-lightweight micro-drone inspired by the dandelion diaspore. This dandelion-inspired drone, dandidrone, represents the first realization of a centimetre-scale, passively flying colorimetric sensor capable of stable and extremely slow free fall, descending at a rate approximately three times slower than that of a natural dandelion seed. These capabilities provide the dandidrone with unprecedented endurance, making it ideal for long-duration environmental monitoring and potential deployment in swarm sensing applications, all while maintaining a negligible ecological footprint. This study outlines the design and fabrication of the dandidrone, including an assessment of current manufacturing limitations for producing such micro-drones. Finally, we suggest directions for advancing the current state of the art and future development.
