Modeling Turbulence at High Strouhal Number Flows for Accurate Noise Predictions
Abstract
Computational Aeroacoustics (CAA) is an important tool used to understand the effects of fluids, specifically air, on sound generation and propagation by means of numerical analysis. One of the limitations encountered when using numerical analysis to study aeroacoustics is the difficulty of accurately modeling turbulent flows, which results in less accurate predictions. This paper presents a new method to model turbulent flows using the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model and different tripping configurations to achieve more accurate far field jet noise prediction at high Strouhal numbers. This method improves high-frequency noise predictions and is validated by comparison with experimental data from the NASA Technical Reports Server Database (NTRS). The sensitivity of the mesh resolution on the far-field acoustics results is also investigated.
