Firefly Blue Ghost Mission 1: SCALPSS 1.1 Camera Calibration
Abstract
The Stereo Cameras for Lunar Plume-Surface Studies (SCALPSS) payload attached to the Firefly Aerospace Blue Ghost Lander successfully completed its mission in March 2025. This payload was designed to measure the pre- and post-landing lunar surface with six cameras in multiple stereo pair combinations. Two of the cameras focused on the pre-landing surface, while the other four were used to measure the post-landing surface. The difference between these two surfaces was designed to determine the amount of lunar regolith displaced during landing. In order to make these measurements, an extensive calibration procedure was developed. This paper details the intrinsic and extrinsic calibration procedures which were developed for all six cameras to enable triangulation of three-dimensional points on the lunar surface from stereo image pairs.
