Abstract

Results for the Second AIAA Stability and Control Prediction Workshop using the HPCMP CREATETM-AV Kestrel KCFD solver are presented. The workshop geometry is the Common Research Model, with the addition of a vertical tail designed by ONERA. Static angle-of-attack and angle-of-sideslip sweeps, and pitching, rolling and yawing forced oscillation simulations are compared with NASA wind tunnel experimental results. Static and dynamic stability derivatives for longitudinal, lateral and directional axes are computed and compared. The CFD solutions use several mesh refinement levels to determine mesh effects. Results for a geometric model without a sting are compared with those for models with sting configurations. In general, the computational results compare favorably with the experimental results. The static and dynamic stability derivatives are close to the same range as the experimental results, and are the same sign, which is important. However, the computational results tended to have a larger range, based on oscillation frequency and even post-processing methodology, than the experimental results. The computational results also had a large dependency on mesh resolution, but mesh independence is not clearly shown. The computational results tend to be more tightly clustered, with less variability, for a medium mesh resolution rather than a more refined mesh. The low Mach and Re of the experimental results may cause problems for typical compressible CFD solvers.
