Design of a Counterflow Burner for Studying Flame Characteristics of Ammonia-Hydrogen Mixtures at High Pressure Gas Turbine Conditions
Abstract
Ammonia is gaining attention as a promising carbon-free fuel and hydrogen carrier due to its high hydrogen content, ease of storage, and compatibility with existing fuel distribution infrastructure. This study describes the design of a vertical counterflow burner composed of straight concentric ducts, with the top duct supplying oxidizer and the bottom duct supplying an ammonia-hydrogen fuel mixture. Future work will involve using this burner with a pressure vessel to experimentally evaluate parameters such as extinction strain rate, flame temperature, and flame position at aviation-relevant temperatures and pressures. The counterflow diffusion flame will aim to investigate flame characteristics under conditions relevant to aviation turbine applications.
