Model Sharing and Collaboration Approaches for Next Generation of MDAO Collaboration: Results From the NASA MBSA&E Phase I Program
Abstract
This paper presents Boeing’s approach to enabling secure, tool‑agnostic model sharing and collaboration for Model‑Based Systems Analysis & Engineering (MBSA&E). Building on the Boeing Supplier Engagement Framework (SEF) and multi‑year proof‑of‑concept work with industry partners, we define and demonstrate two complementary exchange workflows—Comprehensive and Narrow Sharing—addressing a spectrum of collaboration needs from full transparency to strong intellectual‑property (IP) protection. The work codifies a Technical Data Package (TDP) manifest, model identity cards (MICs), and metadata practices (aligned with AP243 and MoSSEC) to support model exchanges with other organizations within MBSA&E, and evaluates obfuscation approaches and tool integrations for white/grey/black box sharing. An Environmental Control System use case with Collins validates the lifecycle: engagement level selection, reference model templating, model preparation (embedded and attached manifests), repository configuration, and end‑to‑end exchange and decryption workflows. We report lessons learned on practical limitations of current tools for selective obfuscation, recommendations for tool‑agnostic requirements, and example acceptance criteria to guide future tool acquisition. The deliverables, workflow artifacts, reference templates, and implementation guidance, provide a repeatable pathway for NASA, OEMs, suppliers, and academia to accelerate collaborative MBSA&E efforts while preserving IP and reducing model conversion overhead.
