Abstract

Accurate discrete element method simulations of planetary regolith are essential for predicting rover mobility, excavation performance, and in-situ resource utilization processes. Yet, DEM studies frequently rely on material parameter sets that are not explicitly calibrated against manufacturer-provided bulk behavior metrics, reducing confidence in predicted granular mechanics. This work introduces a Taguchi-based calibration framework that evaluates the influence of particle-level interaction parameters and particle-size scaling on angle of repose behavior. Angle of repose-validated DEM material models are presented for the LHS-1 and MGS-1 regolith simulants using the Project Chrono DEM-Engine, enabling improved fidelity in future mobility and excavation simulations.
